Wow - it's been quite a week, hasn't it? It may seem trivial to talk about home when there's so much going on politically and socially just outside our doors...or inside our doors! But our homes become even more important during these turbulent, uncertain times. We need home to help us recharge and feel safe. Your home has a big job to do. Today take a moment to be thankful for it, no matter the size.
Big hugs to everyone. Here is Mantra #6: The Home You Love Isn't About Size.
It's easy to subscribe to the cultural notion that bigger is better, especially when it comes to our homes. Life would be so amazing, we think, if only we had a few extra hundred - or thousand - square feet. To many of us, having a bigger home means having a better life.
We talk about starter homes - those little two bedroom one bath houses that we settle for until we can get into something bigger. Those starter homes are meant to be long-term temporary living arrangements while we work our way up the socio-economic ladder. Eventually, we'll land ourselves in a house with more space and life will be good.
And for apartment dwellers? Well, living in a 400 square foot studio apartment is ok when you're in your 20s, but when you're grown up you're supposed to have, you know, a real place to live.
We can be so judge-y about size, can't we?
We need to remember that size is not what makes a soulful home. Yes, it's true that sometimes a little extra square footage can make our lives easier. But a 3000 square foot home isn't inherently better than a 400 square foot studio apartment. Both can be equally soulful. And both can be equally loved.
Living in a small home can actually be a blessing. Less space means less to clean and less cost to furnish. It forces us to be more mindful of what we bring into our homes. And although cozying up in a true "Tiny House" may be a bit extreme for many of us, there is a certain charm and freedom that comes with paring down our living spaces.
The Home You Love is not about size any more than your own self worth is about size. When you start longingly dreaming about more square footage, remind yourself that the whole bigger is better thing is a myth. The Home You Love can be created in any size.
